From giving birth in lockdown, having to shield, no contact with humans for weeks other than online, and helping my ASD son cope through the dramatic changes. We have adapted by bringing in other activities that we wouldn’t normally have used. From writing or drawing out our feelings to helping play ‘teacher’ or taking time out in the garden to have a ‘break’ from one another. Doing the creative activities in our sessions really helped us to learn to do things differently at home in the current circumstances. Especially as things became dark at times with the feelings of loneliness.
I would like to thank you for providing these sessions. Since lockdown started I have been in some dark places mentally, and really struggled in the beginning of it. Having limited contact to online only and no face-to-face social interaction. Being stuck in the house with partner and children, playing wife, mum, teacher, friend and more. Having the pregnancy and new baby hormones – it really was a lot to cope with and adjust to. Having to provide care to my son and my father-in-law (who moved in temporarily) – this has been the most difficult time I’ve experienced for quite some time.
I feel like I have learned how to express myself in art form and to use that as a coping mechanism, and to change the way I process pain. I will use the creative arts I have learned to help my children express themselves more freely too.
